Chert is a sedimentary rock composed of microcrystallite quartz. It is a tough rock that ancient people used to make tools and weapons. It can be broken to form very sharp edges. It also produces a spark when struck with a piece of metal.
The contrast between local clast derivation in the polymict pebble conglomerates and distant clast derivation for the quartz pebble conglomerates is consistent with a transition from long-system fluvial deposition of the lower Goldstein Peak Formation to short-system alluvial fan deposition of the uppermost Goldstein Peak Formation.

The conglomerates are rich in pyrite (iron sulfide) pebbles and uraninite (uranium oxide) pointing to an anoxic atmosphere.
The quartz pebbles and associated sediments form a set of deposits called the Taratu Formation, which is found all along the east coast of Otago. The Taratu Formation does contain gold eroded from the deposits in the schist basement, although this gold is typically widely dispersed through the sediments.

In the middle river reach, mining began in the late medieval times and involved Ag, Cu, Pb, and Sn ores. The mining and metal production peaked in the 16th century (Lelkov , 2016, Matys Grygar et al., 2016b, Matys Grygar et al., 2017).
